3 New Years Resolutions

1.)

This year I will strive to get all A's in my classes by the end of the semester.

2.)

I will go to the gym 1-3 times a week to continue a healthy lifestyle.

3.)

I will push myself to try new things and be open-minded to be more adventurous. 

Pop Art

Pop  Art

    Pop art originated from England in the 1950s to challenge traditional art. This art form focuses on pop culture icons. The original icons in popart were Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Mouse, Coca-Cola and Michael Jackson. Pop art is art based on a trending culture. Pop art is modern day art.

I decided to create an art piece concerning young, hispanic, adults’ entertainment. Usually, every teenage girl goes out to party and dances every weekend. It is a must for girls to wear heels even if, you are taller than your dancing partner. Therefore, I wanted to emphasize on the shoes of young ladies and have a simple background. I painted the background many shades of grey and black to add texture to the dance floor. I used an old pair of heels and cut them mid way down to attach them to my canvas. I painted the bottoms red to just have one color pop out.

Throughout the process, I faced a few challenges such as my heels being too heavy for my canvas painting. Another issue I faced was the glue I would use to hold my heels to my canvas. However, I quickly discussed solutions with my teacher and attached my heels with silicon glue and hot glue. This attachment was a success, the heels stayed strong to my canvas. In result, the background and half-cut heels went well together.

Furniture Design Critique

During the process in creating a teddy bear mailbox, I figured that it would be odd. I decided to completely drift my project toward a stand. I pictured my piece to be a wooden stand with a huge bowl on top of the stand, to place small objects. The objects the bowl would contain is; keys, jewelry, gum etc. The color combination I wanted to use was autumn colors. My stand would be a burgundy shade to go along with my lamps. That are brown and burgundy. Therefore, my lamp and stand would look great together.

The process of creating my wooden stand was a bit concerning. The would stand was not completely straight, It had a curve here and there. I identified potential solutions and found an effective strategy to make it less noticeable. I used sand paper to make it somewhat even on both ends. As I added finishing touches, I got an idea from my  teacher to add copper strips to the sides. So, the book shelves on the sides are blinged out and catch someone's eye. Seeing my final result was amazing, the last minute finishing touch helped my project. The goldish Orange color of copper and burgundy went very well together. I also weaved my bowl instead of paper mâché. After discussing many issues with the size of the plastic bowl I originally brought it in, I decided to weave it and I loved the outcome.

Just like everything has their strengths and weaknesses, I encountered some myself. The size of my bowl was too small for my stand. It simply looked unbalanced. The bowl I brought in was plastic and it had detailed that made it appear as if it was glass. So, after receiving feedback and critiques from my peers and teacher, I decided to go with a weaved bowl. I used wire as my armature. However, the number of wires forming the shape of a hemi-sphere was unequal. Due to this issue, I had to skip one wire so every round of yarn either went over or under. I eventually, added another wire to not have the problem of skipping one. This benefited my project greatly. The final product was amazing overall. I felt that everything worked well together. Everything was balanced.

Resolution

Academic: My resolution when I graduate in 2017 is to be Valedictorian and have a 4.0 GPA unweighted every semester for the rest of my highschool experience.

Post- secondary: My resolution for my post secondary readiness is to apply for multiple scholarships.

Lamp Design Artist Statement

                   After pinning 30 lamps, I noticed that there are awesome complex lamps but we needed to find DIY lamps. Out of all the lamp searching I did, lanterns stood out the most to me.  I personally like lanterns because you can place a candle that smells amazing! I wanted to make a series of lanterns with the same design but different sizes. I originally had three lanterns but I made four instead. The medium I used was clay. After making my second lantern, I noticed my first one had a few cracks. I panicked due to the time and effort I put into my work. I assumed they were all going to crack and look messy after they were fired. However, I had a conversation with Mrs. Cooper and she gave me the idea to glaze it so it looks old but intentionally. For future occasions that I work with clay, I will let my piece dry very slow so; they do not get any cracks. My smallest lantern did not have any cracks, I glazed it a maroon color because it still ties in to a dark color scheme with the other lanterns. Two out of four will be glazed with freckled brown and the other two are maroon. I wanted to make two of the lanterns a holiday color since it is almost Christmas time. These are perfect lanterns to have in your room with a candle lit and just have relax time. To conclude, once all the lanterns are glazed and fired they will make great lamps because they still give off light from the flame. But they will make even better lanterns to have in your room and peacefully snooze off. Make sure your house does not burn down though!

Cultural Extinction

I remember when I was six, every January 6th my parents would buy sweet bread (Rosca). It had dried fruit that was dyed green, yellow and red, I never knew what those colors symbolized. As I've gotten older I discovered that green symbolizes peace, red symbolizes love and yellow symbolizes honor. The bread is shaped into an oval to represent a king's crown. However, there is a little surprise awaiting for you, a plastic a baby. The plastic baby symbolizes Jesus Christ. It is hidden inside the bread, to represent the Christ child's birth location to remain a secret. If your slice of the sweet bread has the plastic baby it means that for Dia de la Candelaria on February 2nd, you have to host the party and make the tamales. This day is very symbolic in my culture, sadly, this day is no longer celebrated for many people.

Instantly, when our topic was cultural extinction for this project, I had a vision of how I wanted it to look. I knew I was going to make some adjustments to the white plastic baby that is found inside the Rosca, I was going to make it colorful and innocent. The baby was going to be sitting in the center of the oval bread, the slogan was going to go across my final piece in black fancy letters. On the other hand, as I was finishing my art piece, I noticed space was going to be a huge issue when I started to write my slogan. For a moment I freaked out, but, after discussing and getting feedback from my Advanced Product Design teacher, Mrs.Cooper, I found a solution. How did I not think of it? It was a good thing I wrote in pencil, all I had to do was make the words a tiny bit smaller and put the words on the negative space by the baby's head. In spite of this slight challenge, the medium I used was a success. The acrylic paint captured the look I was going for, a faded look to not cause things to be so harsh. With a touch of water the paint smoothly gave my piece a faded look.

The cultural tradition of La Rosca needs to be brought back by the art of propaganda. January 6, 2015 will be the day that La Rosca De Los Reyes Magos will be celebrated once again. Peace, love and honor will be symbolized on this day. Remember, if in your slice you get the plastic baby..... Te tocan los tamales!

Today I will identify my medium and ask questions through speaking to Mrs. Cooper. I will begin creating my lamp and finish the smaller lamp (structure) but not the detail. Exit ticket: I completed the structure my next steps are to cut out the design.

Last week we completed paper machining the torso of the body. We encountered difficulties when we tried to attach the arm, however, we figured an effective way to attach it. We filled in the whole body with butcher paper and made a piece come into the arm holding both parts together. Today we will continue to start the bottom half of the body. We will finish at least one leg today.
